What's Included

The Standard Eye Examination

45–60 minutes

Our eye examinations are private and unhurried — typically 45 to 60 minutes. We use a full suite of diagnostic instruments to assess your visual acuity, eye health, and prescription needs. Every examination includes a detailed discussion of your results, lifestyle, and any concerns you may have.

Every Examination Includes

  • Visual acuity and refraction assessment
  • Intraocular pressure measurement
  • Anterior and posterior eye health examination
  • Digital retinal imaging (included as standard)
  • Personalised discussion of results and recommendations

Your Appointment

What to Expect

1

Pre-Appointment Questionnaire

We'll ask about your current vision, any symptoms or concerns, your general health, and your family eye history. This helps us tailor the examination to you.

2

Preliminary Checks

Automated instruments measure your current prescription and check intraocular pressure — the key indicator for glaucoma risk.

3

Refraction — Finding Your Prescription

Your optometrist will carefully assess your vision at different distances and fine-tune your prescription, including checking for astigmatism.

4

Retinal Imaging

Digital photos of the back of your eye are taken to check the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels. These images form part of your permanent record for comparison at future visits.

5

Full Ocular Health Check

Using a slit lamp and ophthalmoscope, your optometrist examines both the front and back of your eye for signs of conditions such as cataracts, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease.

6

Results & Discussion

We explain everything clearly — your prescription, what we found, and what (if anything) needs to happen next. There's no rush; we welcome all your questions.

Advanced Diagnostics

Optional Add-On Tests

Enhance your examination with advanced diagnostic technology.

5–10 minutes

OCT Scan

Optical Coherence Tomography

"A detailed 3D map of your retina"

An OCT scan uses light waves to produce a high-resolution, cross-sectional image of the layers beneath the retinal surface — detail that cannot be seen with standard examination alone. It's one of the most powerful tools available for detecting early eye disease.

Detects

  • Early macular degeneration
  • Glaucoma damage before symptoms appear
  • Diabetic macular oedema
  • Vitreous and retinal detachments

Ideal for

Anyone over 40, those with a family history of eye disease, diabetics, or patients wanting the most comprehensive check available.

Included as standard

Retinal Photography

Digital Fundus Photography

"A permanent photographic record of your retinal health"

High-resolution digital photographs of the fundus (the back of the eye) give us a baseline record of your retinal health. Changes over time — even subtle ones — become visible when images are compared year on year.

Detects

  • Changes to the optic disc
  • Retinal haemorrhages
  • Signs of hypertensive retinopathy
  • Progression of known conditions

Ideal for

All patients. Particularly valuable for those with existing conditions such as diabetes or hypertension, and as a baseline for younger patients.

Corneal Topography

Corneal Mapping

"A precise 3D map of your cornea's surface"

Corneal topography maps the curvature of the front surface of the eye in precise detail. This is especially important for contact lens fitting — particularly for orthokeratology, scleral, and RGP lenses — and for identifying conditions such as keratoconus.

Detects

  • Keratoconus and corneal irregularities
  • Dry eye surface changes
  • Post-surgical corneal changes
  • Astigmatism type and axis accuracy

Ideal for

Contact lens wearers, patients with irregular astigmatism, anyone who has had laser eye surgery, and those being assessed for specialist lens fittings.

Who We See

Eye Examinations for Everyone

Adults

Recommended: Every two years

Even if your vision seems fine, many serious eye conditions develop silently — without obvious symptoms until significant damage has occurred. A regular eye examination is one of the most important health checks you can have.

Children

Recommended: Annually

Children often don't realise their vision is poor — they simply accept what they see as normal. Early detection of conditions like lazy eye (amblyopia), squint, or short-sightedness can make a significant difference to a child's development and learning. NHS-funded eye examinations are available for all children under 16.

Free NHS eye examinations available for all children under 16 (and under 19 if in full-time education).

Over 60s & NHS Eligible

Recommended: Annually

If you are 60 or over, you are entitled to a free NHS sight test. The risk of conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataracts increases with age — making regular examinations especially important.

Free NHS sight tests are available for patients aged 60 and over, those with glaucoma or a family history of glaucoma, and those on certain benefits.
